Sometimes you’ve got to go to work.\u00a0 You know, the day job. You can’t be climbing mountains every day. But lucky you. \u00a0You bicycle past Yatsuyama every day. Right downtown. And even with the day job, you can find the\u00a0thirty or forty minutes it takes to get up and down—less, if you run.<\/p>\n

Yatsuyama. Yatsu Mountain. All of 108 meters above sea level. Once I told someone I liked hiking in the mountains. I told him when I didn’t have much time I’d hike up Yatsu Mountain. He laughed and said that you could hardly call Yatsuyama a mountain.<\/p>\n

That had been bothering me a bit,\u00a0but this time, atop Yatsuyama, I was lucky enough to run into a goddess ( somewhat diminuitive and\u00a0rather bent in the back) \u00a0. . .<\/p>\n

. . . who’d just been cleaning up the place, and I asked her what she thought.<\/p>\n

“Is Yatsuyama a real mountain?”<\/p>\n

“Did you climb up<\/em> it?” she asked.<\/p>\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n

“Along the way, did you hear elfish voices saying, ‘Keep going! Just a little farther?”<\/p>\n

“I think so.”<\/p>\n

“Was there a top?”<\/em><\/p>\n

“This is <\/em>the top, isn’t it?”<\/p>\n

“It is, indeed. And you can look down<\/em> and see stuff, can’t you? Look, the whole city, the ocean.<\/p>\n

And if you look out<\/em>, you can look over<\/em> a lot a stuff and see a lot more stuff. See, there are the southern Alps. And step over there, and I think you’ll find an old\u00a0friend of mine\u00a0out and about.”<\/p>\n

I did. Mt. Fuji.<\/p>\n

“I see,” I said. “Thank you.”<\/p>\n

Ah, what a wonderful thing to be able to say: I was kind of busy, I didn’t have much time—just enough to climb a mountain.<\/p>\n

Yeah, not much time. Just enough, up on Yatsuyama, to watch the sun set.<\/p>\n

Just enough time to see the sun set a single spear of pampas grass aglow.<\/p>\n

Amazingly, the spear was not overwhelmed. It\u00a0made the sun’s light swirl, and while it took in all<\/em> the sun’s energy,\u00a0it kept its own glow soft.<\/p>\n

And I thought that if\u00a0I could only\u00a0take home that swirl of soft glow, that swirl holding the whole of the sun, if\u00a0I could only hang\u00a0it over\u00a0the dinner table that evening, a light and lightshade au naturel,\u00a0<\/em>well, someone<\/em> might just lean across the table and give\u00a0me an equally soft kiss.<\/p>\n
