I mean, that&#8217;s\u00a0the most beautiful blue I&#8217;ve ever seen. That&#8217;s the <em>bluest<\/em> blue I&#8217;ve ever seen.&#8221; And\u00a0it must have been so, because when I said it, it sounded about as\u00a0<em>so<\/em> as\u00a0anything\u00a0could sound.<\/p>\n<p>We could have stayed home. There was the hour and fifteen minutes drive up to Umegashima. There was the possibility of an icy road&#8212;not much chance, at least during the morning, of temperatures getting above freezing. I&#8217;d made cookies.\u00a0I could have sat around and whiled away the morning with a pot of coffee,\u00a0lavishing\u00a0myself with\u00a0abundant calories.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0I didn&#8217;t. We didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_snowy_road_500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1451 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_snowy_road_500.jpg\" alt=\"141228_snowy_road_500\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, we drive right on past the village of hot spring inns, the <em>ryokan<\/em>, and wind right on up the mountain road for another twenty minutes, to the &#8220;parking lot.&#8221;\u00a0But it&#8217;s almost the new year,\u00a0and\u00a0we guessed there would be significant snow&#8211;so we started the walk from the village itself. An hour later, we were through the cedar forest and back out on the\u00a0road. We&#8217;d have never made it in a car&#8211;at least not in my Aqua.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_snowy_river_500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1450 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_snowy_river_500.jpg\" alt=\"141228_snowy_river_500\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, I pretty much knew the points where we had to cross, back and forth, over the little Sakasa River,\u00a0 and it was a serene walk up to the pass.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_deer_tracks_375.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1445 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_deer_tracks_375.jpg\" alt=\"141228_deer_tracks_375\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The deer seemed to think so, too.<\/p>\n<p>First along the river itself, then along the dry river bed. Less than an hour and we were at that magical pass.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_abetoge1_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1440 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_abetoge1_600.jpg\" alt=\"141228_abetoge1_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Man, that sky is blue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And then dead right we turned, straight up the slope that would take us to the ridge of Bara-no-dan. Once we hit the ridge, the view opened up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_fuji1_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1448\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_fuji1_600.jpg\" alt=\"141228_fuji1_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was a bit more accumulation of snow along the ridge, a lot of\u00a0it still soft, and that made the walking&#8212;not particularly difficult or dangerous&#8212;but, well, just a little more\u00a0. . . a little more\u00a0adventurous.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_baranodan2_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1458 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_baranodan2_600.jpg\" alt=\"141228_baranodan2_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even the elves that accompanied us had their &#8220;irons&#8221; secured tightly to their boots.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_boots_500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1444 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_boots_500.jpg\" alt=\"141228_boots_500\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(No, no, they don&#8217;t <em>iron<\/em> their boots&#8212;and neither do we.)<\/p>\n<p>If the moisture and wind and temperature\u00a0are all\u00a0just right, a feathery ice will adhere itself to the bare <em>shiro yashio<\/em> twigs. You&#8217;ve probably got a three- or four-hour window to see this in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_yashio_frosty_branch_500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1454 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_yashio_frosty_branch_500.jpg\" alt=\"141228_yashio_frosty_branch_500\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But if you want to see the feathers <em>glisten<\/em>, you may only \u00a0have a <em>ten-minute<\/em> window.<\/p>\n<p>First, it&#8217;s dark. You can&#8217;t see. Then the\u00a0light filters in, and you can see. That&#8217;s the way it works. Then the sun tips over the upper ridge.\u00a0The feathery ice\u00a0glistens. The brown seeds and the red buds of the\u00a0<em>shiro yashio, <\/em>side by side, shine with tremendous respect for one another. You feel as if you&#8217;ve been invited to a pageant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_yashio_frosty_branch2_500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1456 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_yashio_frosty_branch2_500.jpg\" alt=\"141228_yashio_frosty_branch2_500\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then it melts.<\/p>\n<p>Take a picture now.\u00a0 If you like. <em>Look<\/em> now. It&#8217;ll all be gone when you pass back by on your way down. Yeah, a ten-minute window. And you just happened to come along.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_yashio_frosty_branch3b_400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1455 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_yashio_frosty_branch3b_400.jpg\" alt=\"141228_yashio_frosty_branch3b_400\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_yashio_frosty_branch3b_400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_yashio_frosty_branch3b_400-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Me and my hearty hiker partner, we looked at each other and sang the chorus from one of the many songs in our ever-expanding repetoire:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>We laughed at their lot<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>And we put up a paradise!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_baranodan_snow_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1459 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_baranodan_snow_600.jpg\" alt=\"141228_baranodan_snow_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yes! It&#8217;s\u00a0truly\u00a0lovely!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So\u00a0shall we really forgo resolutions for the New Year?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If we do, it should only be because they&#8217;ve become obsolete&#8212;because we&#8217;ve already <em>resolved<\/em> to make new resolutions with every day that breaks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The sun is but a morning star. . . . HDT<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_fuji_baranodan_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1446 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_fuji_baranodan_600.jpg\" alt=\"141228_fuji_baranodan_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Waaaaah! And then you&#8217;re at the top. You left the inn at 8:45 AM. You stopped to take two hundred and thirty-one pictures. (You&#8217;ll like\u00a0maybe ten or fifteen.) And you needed the time to take off one of your gloves for each photo opportunity. You banged your boots up against tree trunks, clearing the snow, thirteen times. You took <em>off<\/em> your boots and dumped out snow twice. You slipped and fell on your bum once. You stopped and said, &#8220;Man, that&#8217;s blue. I mean, that is the bluest blue ever,&#8221; six times. You stopped, wanting to say it all even\u00a0<em>one more time<\/em>, but\u00a0you knew\u00a0you no longer had to, so you\u00a0just stood there, leaning on your hiking poles and grinning like a fool . . . who-knows-how-many times. Once you stopped and stared at those <em>yashio<\/em> seeds and buds, thinking about the seeds in the pots you have back home, wondering if they&#8217;ll really sprout when the spring comes. You <em>imagined<\/em> the slivers of green\u00a0slipping out from their soft brown cases&#8211;and for a moment, you &#8220;drifted away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And then a\u00a0few times you and your hearty hiking partner stopped and talked a bit about &#8220;real&#8221; things&#8211;homes, family, budgets. It was\u00a0four, maybe five degrees below the freezing point (celsius), but you never bothered to\u00a0dig out either of the jackets you have in your backpack.\u00a0You didn&#8217;t need to.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yes, yes, you dropped a glove, took a couple of steps forward,\u00a0went back for it. . . let&#8217;s say, <em>seven<\/em> times. No fears, you never <em>lost<\/em> it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And now it&#8217;s 12:15 PM and you&#8217;re at the top! Take out your gore-tex jacket, spread it across the snow, sit down, enjoy a rice ball and a hot cup of ginger tea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_hiking_poles_500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1449 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_hiking_poles_500.jpg\" alt=\"141228_hiking_poles_500\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bask in the sun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Maybe tip your hat to Mr. Fuji.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_fuji_baranodan2_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1447\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_fuji_baranodan2_600.jpg\" alt=\"141228_fuji_baranodan2_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 He may tip his hat to you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_fuj_tipping_hat_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1462 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/141228_fuj_tipping_hat_600.jpg\" alt=\"141228_fuj_tipping_hat_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">(But you can&#8217;t pull the wool over his eyes, so don&#8217;t even think about it.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And then down you go. Probably you&#8217;ll find the snow takes it easier on your knees than the solid ground does. Enjoy sliding around a bit.
