\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I know I said I’d call by five,<\/p>\n

but the soup—I got the onions, the garlic, the cream just right,<\/p>\n

everyone said so,<\/p>\n

and the talk was so nice,<\/p>\n

and when I walked everyone out to their cars,<\/p>\n

and there was that big blue sky<\/p>\n

and I think I told you I’d just oiled\u00a0my chain,<\/p>\n

what choice did I have?<\/p>\n

And when at last<\/p>\n

I saw the horizon go peachy,<\/p>\n

with me and my bicycle right there,<\/p>\n

so close to Yatsuyama,<\/p>\n

what was I to do?<\/p>\n

I even saw a way up I never had before,<\/p>\n

and up\u00a0a new trail I went,<\/p>\n

through bamboo,<\/p>\n

and then there I was,<\/p>\n

in a playground<\/p>\n

—who knew?—<\/p>\n

with a giant jungle gym—<\/p>\n

with a magic lookout<\/p>\n

to be scaled by ropes and ladders,<\/p>\n

and I got up there just in time to see big clouds rumble up like mountains,<\/p>\n

all pink,<\/p>\n

and to see the sun set over the hills out towards Yaizu,<\/p>\n

and the crows,<\/p>\n

—those blasted<\/em> crows, we’ve always said—<\/p>\n

were coming home to roost like mad,<\/p>\n

back to Yatsuyama,<\/p>\n

only now I tell you,<\/p>\n

there was something about their song<\/p>\n

I liked.<\/p>\n

So forgive me, but I just stood there and watched the sky turn lavender and pink.<\/p>\n

A plum tree ripening before my very eyes,<\/p>\n

the taste in my mouth so delicious and sweet—<\/p>\n

Ah!\u00a0I remember now! Do you?<\/p>\n

That time<\/p>\n

I bought\u00a0you those\u00a0grapes,<\/p>\n

and you invited me over,<\/p>\n

and how when I got to your place,<\/p>\n

you’d just eaten the\u00a0last one—<\/p>\n

how you said they’d been so delicious and sweet,<\/p>\n

and how I put my hand on your hip–your smile<\/em> so delicious and sweet?<\/p>\n

Ah, sweetheart,<\/p>\n

how long I needed to stand there<\/p>\n

wishing I could<\/p>\n

kiss<\/p>\n
