The Hearty Hikers team had left Shizuoka early morning, and were now bearing down on the long stretch of peaks known collectively as Yatsugadake, in Nagano.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t ask if that was the driver who had his arm out the window taking the above shot. Just focus on the silhouette of the range. Try to keep the shape of the individual peaks clear in your mind. Probably you can&#8217;t. Because they are going to look different a zillion times over before the next two days are through.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_minoto_signpost_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2210 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_minoto_signpost_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_minoto_signpost_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s about a zillion routes up into the &#8220;hills&#8221;&#8212;but we chose to start at Minoto Guchi. Actually, we chose to start at Minoto itself, not the Guchi, the &#8220;gateway&#8221; to Minoto, but three or four minutes over the deeply rutted road up to Minoto had me fearing that my poor little Aqua might not make it, so we backed up, and parked at\u00a0the Guchi (half price), and walked forty minutes or so extra.<\/p>\n<p>This is part of the fun of a first experience. You don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s coming, whether or not it&#8217;s going to be completely safe\u00a0or problem-free. Or maybe that <em>wouldn&#8217;t<\/em> be part of the fun for you.<\/p>\n<p>We left the parking lot at about 9:15.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_kitazawa_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2197 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_kitazawa_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_kitazawa_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At Minoto, you can choose to go up along the North Stream (<em>Kitazawa)<\/em>, or the South one (<em>Minamizawa). <\/em>As we had our eyes set on <em>Io-dake <\/em>(&#8220;Sulphur Mountain&#8221;), we took the North Stream.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_purple_bell_2_450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2201 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_purple_bell_2_450.jpg\" alt=\"150806_purple_bell_2_450\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were flowers galore.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_baby_thistle_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2188 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_baby_thistle_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_baby_thistle_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_blue_pigeon_flowers_2_600.jpg\">\u00a0<\/a>We\u00a0came across\u00a0numerous types of thistles, most of them still in bud, and some, like this one, looking an awful lot like jet engines about to let it rip. What energy!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_blue_pigeon_flowers_2_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2189 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_blue_pigeon_flowers_2_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_blue_pigeon_flowers_2_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These guys, <em>ibukitorikabuto <\/em>(what a name!), love hanging out by the water. Don&#8217;t get too close, though, they&#8217;re said to be rather toxic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_blue_pigeon_flowers_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2190 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_blue_pigeon_flowers_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_blue_pigeon_flowers_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My Hearty Hikers companion suggested that this cluster of buds looked like a gathering of pigeons. Yeah, yeah, I can see that, but she also said that . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_dancing_swan_flower_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2191 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_dancing_swan_flower_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_dancing_swan_flower_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . these light-hearted creamy yellow lovers looked like swans dancing. Yes, they&#8217;re swans, obviously, but they&#8217;re way past dancing&#8212;they&#8217;re <em>necking!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_mineral_stream_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2199 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_mineral_stream_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_mineral_stream_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whether there was sulphur in the water coming down the &#8220;sulphur&#8221; mountain or not, I don&#8217;t know, but there was definitely some sort of heavy mineral content.<a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_yellow_orange_flower_600.jpg\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_yellow_orange_flower_600.jpg\">\u00a0<\/a>Speaking of heavy mineral content, I don&#8217;t feel comfortable going on these more-than-a-day trips without a book in my backpack. I know I&#8217;ll be too tired to read a lot&#8212;so it has to be a book\u00a0from which\u00a0a sentence or two can do wonders for me.<\/p>\n<p>I took the same book that I took with me to climb <em>Shirouma<\/em> in Hakuba, Nagano, a few summers ago.<\/p>\n<p>Atop <em>Shirouma<\/em>, I read just\u00a0three sentences (I think) to my Hearty Hikers buddy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Who sees the many and not the ONE, wanders on from death to death. Even by the mind this truth is to be learned: there are not many but only ONE. Who sees variety and not the unity wanders on from death to death.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_yellow_orange_flower_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2208 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_yellow_orange_flower_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_yellow_orange_flower_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the flowers were small and tucked in among the grass, so you had to look close to find them&#8212;but they were there in plenty, that&#8217;s for sure.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s little wonder that when I spotted these guys, I turned to my Hearty Hikers companion and said, &#8220;Look where we are now!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_yellow_white_flower_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2209\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_yellow_white_flower_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_yellow_white_flower_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And now!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We came upon the <em>Akadake Kosen<\/em> Lodge around noon, had some wonderfully delicious rice balls, and some chicken sauteed in pesto (the perfect combination, rice balls and pesto, that is), then headed on up, no longer along the river, and no longer in the land of flowers aplenty.<\/p>\n<p>In the woods, <em>sans<\/em> river, we began to anticipate the tree line&#8212;and a panoramic view.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_silver_woods_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2214 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_silver_woods_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_silver_woods_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But we remained tucked inside the woods until almost the very moment we stepped out on the ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Not flowers aplenty maybe, inside those woods, but there&#8217;s always a fellow here or there who jumps out and surprises you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_violet_b_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2204 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_violet_b_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_violet_b_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes, yes, &#8220;Here we are!&#8221;\u00a0she exclaimed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_iodake_ridge_arrival_3_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2194 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_iodake_ridge_arrival_3_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_iodake_ridge_arrival_3_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_iodake_signpost_600.jpg\">\u00a0<\/a>You can expect, in the afternoon, that\u00a0the mist is going to roll in, and when we stepped up onto the ridge (at 1:40), it was there to greet us.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_iodake_signpost_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2196 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_iodake_signpost_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_iodake_signpost_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The signs were clear enough, even if, for the moment, they were in the middle of grey, and pointing, in both directions at nothing but grey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_iodake_ridge_arrival_2_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2193 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_iodake_ridge_arrival_2_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_iodake_ridge_arrival_2_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A moment later, though, the mist cleared a bit, and the peak of Mt. Io-dake came into view. Not so steep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_yellow_flower_type_2_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2207 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_yellow_flower_type_2_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_yellow_flower_type_2_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ridge provided a completely different environment for the flowers. These guys loved it up there. They were partying like crazy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_rocks_near_iodake_peak_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2202 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_rocks_near_iodake_peak_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_rocks_near_iodake_peak_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we neared the peak, and the rocks came into better focus, we began to sense what might be awaiting us the next day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_view_of_yoko_aka_amidadake_2_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2203\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_view_of_yoko_aka_amidadake_2_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_view_of_yoko_aka_amidadake_2_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And what do you know, but just like that the breeze blew away almost all the mist over the entire length of Yatsugadake, and there we were atop <em>Io-dake<\/em> with a stunning view of <em>Yoko-dake<\/em> (the sharp tooth), and <em>Aka-dake<\/em> (the tallest peak of the group, in the middle), and <em>Amida-dake<\/em> (where the clouds are gathering, and of which we&#8217;d consider, the next day,\u00a0making our fourth peak, before consulting our knees and deciding to save it for another trip).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_pink_ridge_flower_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2200 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_pink_ridge_flower_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_pink_ridge_flower_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So many ridge flowers!<\/p>\n<p>Yes, yes, I&#8217;d memorized the one sentence I was going to &#8220;read&#8221; from my book once we&#8217;d settled into our lodge, just fifteen minutes down the ridge on the opposite side of Io-dake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Who sees all beings in his own Self, and his own Self in all beings, loses all fear.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I remember someone pointing out \u00a0that passage to me a while back and asking me if I thought that\u00a0that\u00a0&#8220;all beings&#8221; bit included those flying black bugs that buzz around like flies, then\u00a0flip across your skin like somersaulting Olympic gymnasts, then sting the hell out of you . . . and I could only reply that I suppose it did.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_white_ridge_flower2_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2205 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_white_ridge_flower2_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_white_ridge_flower2_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But those ridge flowers, what a delight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_komakusa_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2198 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_komakusa_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_komakusa_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we approached our lodge (around 3 PM, I think), they opened their hearts to us.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_iodake_sanso_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2195 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150806_iodake_sanso_600.jpg\" alt=\"150806_iodake_sanso_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>August 6th.
