After all . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150818_lilies2_6001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2266 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150818_lilies2_6001.jpg\" alt=\"150818_lilies2_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . these guys are\u00a0 blooming all over town&#8212;and in abundance. But the one in my garden has\u00a0 a history. Back in February I was driving home. I&#8217;d just been in a real estate agent&#8217;s unnecessarily plush office signing a contract, buying a seventy-some-odd\u00a0<em>tsubo <\/em>plot\u00a0of land in the northern part of the city, a neighborhood&#8212;Kita (literally, &#8220;North&#8221;)&#8212;nestled between two long rows of little mountains. The plush office, along with the free packages of, yes, wait for it, saran wrap, were just a little too much.<\/p>\n<p>Together, they got mind typhooning.\u00a0Oh, a <em>tsubo<\/em> = 3.3 square meters.<\/p>\n<p>So there I was,\u00a0in the car driving home,\u00a0and I say to the hearty hiker who was with me, &#8220;I don&#8217;t feel like I just bought a piece of land. I mean, someone can&#8217;t just <em>sell <\/em>you a piece of land, can he? You can&#8217;t really\u00a0<em>buy<\/em> land, can you? <em>Can<\/em> you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No, not really,&#8221; she replies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right? I&#8217;m right, right?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Okay, I feel better. You want to go by there?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You had better. If you&#8217;re going to knock down some trees, you&#8217;ll have to tell them. They&#8217;ve got a right to know their fate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Exactly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1301.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2280 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1301-900x570.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1301\" width=\"900\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1301-900x570.jpg 900w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1301.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was an old house to be knocked down, but that didn&#8217;t bother me at all. It was the plants. I had a plan for a garden, new soil was going to have to be brought in, and the plants living there happily weren&#8217;t, unfortunately, for the most part, going to be able to stay.<\/p>\n<p>Were some guy to rush the property, drive a stake into the dirt, claim it for himself, start construction on a hamburger joint . . . I would call the police. That&#8217;s what legal ownership means, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>But the plants aren&#8217;t interested in that.<\/p>\n<p>We thanked them for\u00a0making way for us. (<em>My<\/em> house it will be, I suppose, but members of the Hearty Hikers are welcome to stay whenever they like. Heck, they can <em>move in<\/em> if they want. I love those guys.)<\/p>\n<p>We told\u00a0the plants\u00a0we&#8217;d take care to take good care of the energy of the place.<\/p>\n<p>We couldn&#8217;t save them all, but I dug up a <em>kane-no-naru<\/em> plant (a &#8220;money-making&#8221; plant, so called perhaps, because the leaves resemble coins (however,\u00a0slightly), and\u00a0<em>maybe<\/em> called a &#8220;dollar plant&#8221; in English). And the lily. I didn&#8217;t even know that it <em>was<\/em> a lily at the time. It wasn&#8217;t very big.<\/p>\n<p>And the camellias were getting ready to bloom.\u00a0I clipped some buds and took them home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1300_450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2286 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1300_450.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1300_450\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then we walked to the neighborhood shrine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1322.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2283 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1322.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1322\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>February, right.\u00a0The plum blossoms were lovely.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1321.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2282 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1321.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1321\" width=\"700\" height=\"348\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The altar was\u00a0shining.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1320.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2281 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_1320.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1320\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They know who you are,&#8221; my HH buddy said. &#8220;They&#8217;re happy to see you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I explained to <em>them<\/em> who I was. I&#8217;m moving in, just up the hill, I said, head bowed.\u00a0Gonna make some noise knocking down the old house, putting up a new one. I hope that doesn&#8217;t bother you guys too much. I&#8217;m aware of the energy up there. I&#8217;ll try not to do any damage to it. I promise I&#8217;ll do my best not to mess it up.<\/p>\n<p>I felt pretty good walking back to the lot. I&#8217;m guessing I didn&#8217;t make such a bad impression.<\/p>\n<p>But you can&#8217;t just do this once and think you&#8217;ve got eternal license. You&#8217;ve got to do it <em>every <\/em>day&#8212;and even then\u00a0your license\u00a0will be\u00a0eternally limited. You&#8217;ve paid for stewardship, and nothing more.<\/p>\n<p>May 31. Groundbreaking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150531_jichinsai_shrine3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2275 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150531_jichinsai_shrine3.jpg\" alt=\"150531_jichinsai_shrine3\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The sky is blue. Two priests are dressed in a deep bluish-purple. They explain what&#8217;s going to happen. Basically, we&#8217;re going to let the local deities know, again,\u00a0what we&#8217;re up to. Ask for understanding. First, though,\u00a0we need to clean up a bit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150531_jichinsai_cleansing600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2273 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150531_jichinsai_cleansing600.jpg\" alt=\"150531_jichinsai_cleansing600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The priests take turns chant-chant-chanting. The older one is 88. I figure he must know the dieties pretty well. The young one\u00a0chants while reading\u00a0from a scroll.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150531_jichinsai_speech_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2274 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150531_jichinsai_speech_600.jpg\" alt=\"150531_jichinsai_speech_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The chanting\u00a0goes on for quite a while. Sometimes words leap out clearly&#8212;Mr. R would like to build a house here . . . no fires, please . . . bless the plans of Mr. Architect . . . don&#8217;t let the heat bear down to hard on the carpenters employed by Mr. Builder&#8212;but a lot of it is just <em>ruh-ruh-ruh-ruh-ruh-ruuuuuhhh<\/em>, <em>ruh-ruh-ruh-ruh-ruh-ruuuuuhhh<\/em>, <em>ruh-ruh-ruh-ruh-ruh-ruuuuuhhh<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150531_jichinsai_behind_the_altar_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2272 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/150531_jichinsai_behind_the_altar_600.jpg\" alt=\"150531_jichinsai_behind_the_altar_600\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I loved that sound.\u00a0 I could have listened all day&#8212;listened all through the night.<\/p>\n<p>The chanting flows into you, like the vibration of your ukulele. Those\u00a0few words that you can make sense of\u00a0have popped out\u00a0from the chanting so comically that you are certain they have done so to remind you how\u00a0 comic your existence is&#8212;<em>No! You DON&#8217;T own this land!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And then the young\u00a0priest blows on a big conch shell! It&#8217;s huge and he puts everything he&#8217;s got into it, and you\u00a0think that maybe he&#8217;ll knock the sun right out of the sky, but the sound comes out all muffled, and it&#8217;s as off key as it can get, but still it&#8217;s so\u00a0full of expression, so sincere, so humble, that you suddenly turn to&#8212;who else?&#8212;<em>yourself<\/em> and say: <em>Utatte ii!\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>That is . . . &#8220;<em>You<\/em> can sing! There\u2019s no reason not to sing! You <em>should <\/em>sing!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You want to fly home, grab your ukulele, fly back. You want to stand in front of that shrine, bang\u00a0away on\u00a0those four strings\u00a0and sing, \u201cWa-wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-wah, ba-ba-bloo-ba-bing-bang-boo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crows are circling now, cawing. They&#8217;re spreading the word:\u00a0\u201cHey, this R guy is here. He\u2019s building. Seems all right. Let\u2019s give him a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then the cups of sake are offered.
