Not all that much rain, really.\u00a0But\u00a0enough. Enough to\u00a0loosen up your mind a bit.<\/p>\n

On a day like this, the cedars don’t look taller—just wiser.<\/p>\n

\"150829_leaf_lovers_600\"<\/a>In slightly wet conditions, the leaves of trees allow their natural\u00a0affection for\u00a0one another to get the best of them. They press their bodies together—and do their best to go swimming off together through the grey.\u00a0 Of course, if you’ve mastered your study of evolution, you’ll know it’s\u00a0not surprising to see leaves trying to swim.<\/p>\n

After all, when they get wet and shiny, their colors are as vibrant as those of any tropical fish.<\/p>\n

And just look at those backbones and ribs. Those features are shouting<\/em>, “Of course, fish are\u00a0our\u00a0close relatives!”<\/p>\n

Once you accept this reality, you’ll look down at leaves and be pretty sure they are not immobile on<\/em> the ground—you’ll see that they are, most likely,\u00a0hovering above<\/em> the ground, surfing on waves of air.<\/p>\n

Some leaves, you’ll note, trace their ancestry to fish—but through<\/em>\u00a0the dinosaurs and reptiles.<\/p>\n

The light, oddly enough, loves a rainy day—especially when there is a mountain forest to cut into.<\/p>\n

But the light realizes that it can’t cut through enough to shine on everything<\/em>, so it tends to shine on the things that you<\/em> want to see.<\/p>\n

Really.<\/p>\n

Don’t you like these wild hydrangeas? And you can see them, can’t you? So there you have it.<\/p>\n

In the middle of all this grey, you can see these devil lilies just fine.\u00a0Those sweet\u00a0drops of water you see clearly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It perhaps goes without saying, but a\u00a0bit of rain makes the day a better one for discovering toad (lily)s.<\/p>\n

And on a rainy day, you’ll be much more likely to have the opportunity to hold a giant worm.<\/p>\n

Lucky you.<\/p>\n

And consider this: the yellow flowers of the chabo-hototogisu <\/em>only bloom for a single day. If you had stayed home because of the rain, you would have never met this guy.<\/p>\n
