. . . and misty woods . . .<\/p>\n

. . . through the cedars . . .<\/p>\n

. . . searching out the mottled leaves of our dear, dear friend—Chabohototogisu.<\/p>\n

Everyone joined the search.<\/p>\n

How to describe\u00a0our joy when that demure yellow of hers finally came into sight?<\/p>\n

We all<\/em> love her, but Shizuoka Duo (yeah, those guys were there, too) seemed most affected by\u00a0Chabo’s beauty. At one point, I saw them down on their knees, their backs curled, their lips nearly touching one of the delicate blossoms, and chanting (almost pleading<\/em>, it seemed, to be honest) . . .\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"160814_chabohototogisu_2_600\"<\/p>\n

CHA-BO-HO-TO-TO-GI-SU! CHA-BO-HO-TO-TO-GI-SU! CHA-BO-HO-TO-TO-GI-SU!<\/p>\n

I rolled my eyes once, then caught myself—for I, too, wanted to get down on my knees and chant with them, but, well, I’m just about as shy as Chabo.<\/p>\n

Shizuoka Duo called me that night and said they had a new song. I told them to come on over to the studio. No, they said, they had to wait until everyone could come. All<\/em> the Hearty Hikers.<\/p>\n

So now it’s October—and they finally showed up just last night. I think everyone was <\/em>there. There must have been seventy-five or eighty Hearty Hikers—maybe more.\u00a0 They roared into the studio, a mighty river, their love for Chabo palpable.<\/p>\n

By the way, Shizuoka Duo have been saying they’re going to help me buy some updated equipment—“once they make it”—but that hasn’t happened yet. So I took the old recording equipment from my pocket and said, “Let’s do it.”<\/p>\n

The rest I leave to Shizuoka Duo—and all our Hearty Hiking friends.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re so, so near . . . but don\u2019t sense my appeal?<\/p>\n

CHA-BO-HO-TO-TO-GI-SU<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll walk the woods . . . discover you.<\/p>\n

Show you that . . . my love is true.<\/p>\n

My green is mottled . . . with ugly black spots<\/p>\n

Heart’s in a bottle . . . see how it rots.<\/p>\n

When I finally flower . . . I\u2019m demure yellow<\/p>\n

I exude no power . . . can\u2019t catch no fellow.<\/p>\n

In this August haze . . . I\u2019m nothing unique\u2014<\/p>\n

In a couple of days . . . I\u2019ll wither, grow weak.<\/p>\n

I wish you\u2019d greet me . . . at least share a smile<\/p>\n

That\u2019d help me be . . . content for a while.<\/p>\n

It may just be . . . a single day\u2014<\/p>\n

But you will surely . . . lead the way.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t like my name . . . it\u2019s way too long<\/p>\n

Who could ever frame it . . . in a song?<\/p>\n

The red, red roses . . . they\u2019re always praised<\/p>\n
