{"id":4605,"date":"2018-07-20T22:33:30","date_gmt":"2018-07-20T13:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/?p=4605"},"modified":"2018-07-20T22:38:24","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T13:38:24","slug":"when-your-eyes-are-on-the-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/20\/when-your-eyes-are-on-the-ground\/","title":{"rendered":"When your eyes are on the ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4616 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_orange_mushrooms_1_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_orange_mushrooms_1_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_orange_mushrooms_1_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>A week or so ago, I was lucky enough to get to visit a group of university students and talk about how writers use imagery to communicate ideas.\u00a0 I had students focus on images related to winter and summer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4614 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_kabutomushi_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_kabutomushi_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_kabutomushi_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I talked mainly about how it was easy to find things in both winter and summer that were irritating (dry skin and cold toes in winter, mosquitoes and sweat-drenched clothes in summer), but also easy to find beautiful things, too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4611 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_frog_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_frog_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_frog_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but <em>were<\/em> you to feel a little down, and if your <em>eyes<\/em> were down, too, whether in summer or winter, you might just find something new&#8212;new and beautiful<\/p>\n<p>Which means that you could, just by presenting some images from winter and\/or summer, suggest that when you&#8217;re down in the dumps you can perhaps pull yourself up and out from the dark into a brighter mental state by simply changing your perspective and shifting your focus. In that sense, a song or a poem about winter and\/or summer may become a song or poem about something bigger than winter and summer. This is what makes human language so amazing. Things are sometimes easiest understood when they are not explained too directly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4607 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_butterfly_brown_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_butterfly_brown_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_butterfly_brown_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I sang to the students: \u00a0<em>When your eyes are on the ground, there really is so much to be found<\/em>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4619 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_yellow_mushroom_450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_yellow_mushroom_450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_yellow_mushroom_450-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having sung it, I thought we Hearty Hikers should head to the mountains and see if it were true. And (drum roll), it was!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4610\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_feather_fern_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_feather_fern_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_feather_fern_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We walked from the town of Umegashima, up through the cedars, then along the Sakasa River to the Abe Pass, and then up to the top of Bara-no-dan, and all along the way there were all sorts of discoveries waiting for us down by our feet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4613\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_green_bug_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_green_bug_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_green_bug_600-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And focus on the ground long enough, and you might suddenly want to\u00a0<em>be<\/em> down on the ground. The ground is swelling up all around you.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4606\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_abe_toge_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_abe_toge_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_abe_toge_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And when your eyes have seen so much, whether on the ground, or in the trees, or in the sky, something very magical can happen.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4608 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_curving_tree_450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_curving_tree_450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/180715_curving_tree_450-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>Things begin to vie for your attention.
