I&#8217;m not sure to say how I feel about them but to say that they make me feel\u00a0very\u00a0<em>aware<\/em>. It&#8217;s a very good feeling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4774 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180919_spider_lilies_ryuso_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180919_spider_lilies_ryuso_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180919_spider_lilies_ryuso_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re in the amaryllis family and known by zillions of names. Other names in English are red magic lily, naked lady, resurrection lily, and hurricane lily&#8211;the latter surely because they&#8217;re said to be encouraged to pop out from the ground after a big late summer or early autumn rain.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4773 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180919_spider_lilies_ryuso_2_450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180919_spider_lilies_ryuso_2_450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180919_spider_lilies_ryuso_2_450-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Japanese, their most commonly used name is \u5f7c\u5cb8\u82b1\u00a0 (<em>higanbana<\/em> = the equinox flower), \u3000\u3000\u6b7b\u4eba\u82b1\u3000(<em>shibitobana<\/em> = dead person flower), \u5e7d\u970a\u82b1 (<em>yureibana<\/em> = ghost flower),\u3000\u86c7\u306e\u82b1, (<em>hebi no hana<\/em> = snake flower), \u5243\u5200\u82b1 (<em>kamisoribana<\/em> = razor flower),\u3000\u72d0\u82b1, (<em>kitsunebana<\/em> = fox flower), and&#8212;no offense to anyone intended&#8212;\u306f\u3063\u304b\u3051\u3070\u3070\u3042 (<em>hakkakebabah<\/em> = toothless old woman).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4785 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180922_spider_lilies_white_fence_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180922_spider_lilies_white_fence_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180922_spider_lilies_white_fence_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Sanskrit, they&#8217;re called <em>manjushaka<\/em>, which translates something like &#8220;flower of heaven.&#8221; The scientific name is <em>Lycoris radiata<\/em>, after a spirit of the sea in Greek mythology.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4783 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180922_spider_lilies_river_4_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180922_spider_lilies_river_4_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180922_spider_lilies_river_4_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They originally come from China, where they still exist as diploids, that is, their chromosones come in pairs, enabling them to produce seeds. However, the spider lilies brought into Japan were tripoids, their chromosones coming in sets of three, and are unable to produce seeds. Basically, they are sterile, and can only be grown from their bulbs.<\/p>\n<p>Spider lilies in the U.S., they say, all come from three bulbs brought back from Japan by a military man in 1854&#8212;not long after Admiral Perry had aimed his cannons at the mainland and said, from his &#8220;black ships,&#8221; open up for business or else.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4769 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180919_spider_lilies_channel_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" theory out there is that when rice was first brought from China to Japan, some of the bulbs came along for the ride&#8212;that is, they were not intentionally brought to Japan, and that when the poisonous nature of their bulbs was discovered, farmers planted them at the edge of rice fields to keep away small pests like mice and moles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" find them growing them at the edge of rice fields&#8212;and by rivers and small streams, and also in graveyards.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4791 that if roses are sophisticated and elegant ballet dancers, spider lilies are passionate Latin dancers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4786 flow of petals atop a single stalk looks to me like a ballet ensemble&#8212;six dancers. One stalk with one umbel (a kind of upside-down umbrella frame) with six radiating &#8220;spokes&#8221;, each with a five-curly-petals flower, the petals from one spoke weaving together with the ones to both sides of it. The &#8220;garland&#8221; effect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4798 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180923_spider_lilies_2_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180923_spider_lilies_2_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180923_spider_lilies_2_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some say the spider lilies frighten them. Some say they comfort them. A time to feel content. But it&#8217;s also the beginning of the cool weather. For Buddhists, this is the time of\u00a0<em>Haramitsu\u00a0<\/em>(in Japanese), and <em>Paramita<\/em> (in Sanskrit), which might translate as something like the Six (or Ten) Practices for Becoming Enlightened. Below is a basic explanation of the Six-Practice version. If I&#8217;ve gotten something wrong, or something is a bit incomplete, let me know.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fuse\u00a0<\/em><em>(Dana) &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>generosity, charity, the giving of alms<\/p>\n<p><em>Jikai (Sila) &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>ethical living<\/p>\n<p><em>Nintai (Ksanti)<\/em> &#8211; patience, forbearance, forgiveness<\/p>\n<p><em>Shohjin (Virya)\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; abstinence<\/p>\n<p><em>Zentei (Dhyana) &#8211; <\/em>equanimity and awareness (perhaps through meditation)<\/p>\n<p><em>Chie (Prajna)\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; wisdom, insight into the true nature of reality<\/p>\n<p>To me, these are six of the many, many things the spider lilies want us to consider.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4781 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180922_spider_lilies_rice_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180922_spider_lilies_rice_600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/persimmon-dreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180922_spider_lilies_rice_600-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some people say they look like sentinels, standing at the edge of fields as they do, kind of like the officers on duty in the neighborhood police box: They&#8217;re watching us.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a little creepy, maybe. To me, they are much more like\u00a0<em>Jizo<\/em>. They are bodhisattva, beings well on their way to enlightenment, but beings who have kindly stayed behind\u00a0 so that they can help us, so that they can guide us. &#8220;All things must pass,&#8221; they say to us, &#8220;But that&#8217;s nothing to worry about. It&#8217;s always been that way and always will. You&#8217;re going to be just fine. Just live the best life you can. I like them in all colors.
